Zafka - Yong◎He (Post-Concrete, 2008)
Zafka, to put none too fine a point on it…, is a sound artist from Beijing. His 12 Hours release a few years back was worth a spin but a bit too tentative and hung-up on noise-etiquette to leave much of a mark. Yong-He, on the other hand, is a different beast - he sounds much more certain about what he wants to do, even if it’s inhabiting a fairly subdued space. Much of the record is constructed from field recordings in the Lama Temple area of Beijing, switching between communal noise and secluded indoor chatter, anchored by a gently harmonic (though not necessarily tuneful) drift and the clutter of your usual musique concrete vocab.
